Since this article was written, the effects of the downturn and recession have pulled the rug out from under the kind of event photography it describes. The boom in on-site printing was fuelled by Britain going out and spending money, something the country doesn't do much anymore. The majority of independent photographers who had events-only, on-site printing businesses have either diversified or exited. Most British event photographers now are wedding togs who also cover events, or they are schools/prom photographers. There are about 700 of these, compared to only 200 low-earning, part-time, jobbing, events-only on-site printers. At the top of the market, there are fewer than a dozen comfortably-off events specialists owning larger businesses. Today, an events-only, on-site printing photography business is something you should consider getting into only if you can see some clear and immediate opportunity to exploit.
